It's been a week since I started this project and I'm so happy about that. Now, 51 weeks to go. Can't wait to see how this develops. What I most enjoy about this is that I'm placed in a position to take things day by day. As such, for today here's a quick and loose color sketch of a jellyfish.

Day 7

Today I learned that jellyfish don't have bones, a heart or a brain but do have a complex nerve net. Apparently they're more in the family of the coral. Wow. I took some freedom here but I swear I was staring at a jellyfish image! All in all I find myself getting more and more attracted to the sea life.

When I find a creature from the sea like the Portuguese man-of-war, it makes me stop and look in amazement at the incredible, exquisite beauty that nature can create. Furthermore, I wonder why we should try to recreate its image through painting if it exists in photographs for us to admire as they truly are. However, seeing the photographs of Aaron Ansarov in National Geographic today made my jaw drop. I had to grab my watercolors, not to recreate its image so much, but more so to learn from its seamlessness.

Took to my micron pen today and kept things a bit more minimal. Images of plopping fish and octopuses came into my mind but I decided not to look for a reference but just go with it.

Today was a day to push and pull and have fun with each mark. I had my beautiful niece as inspiration so I channeled her sassy self.

Here's the first drawing to kick off this one year project. I'm super excited to do this and can't wait to see what happens. For this first drawing I took on my favorite media- india ink and gouache! While abstract, I always find a figurative element to these drawings as well.
