I started the drawing upside down but a quarter of the way through it felt right to turn it upside down. Can't believe how long it has been since I worked on a patterned piece like this. I felt so much nostalgia for my days in college studying with Barbara Rossi and Karl Wirsum. They were part of the Chicago Imagists group and are just amazing people and artists.

Started to think up new characters. This is a first attempt. Essentially, noticing my interest in skeletons and combining different animals, I thought to bring them all together. This one is paired off human to human, but you get the point. :)

I got this mole rat skull from the Obscura Antiques & Oddities shop a couple of years ago. Unfortunately one of the front teeth broke off but I kept that side facing away.

Continuing from yesterdays thought of, "if hearts had teeth," came a walrus-like creature. Naturally. :) I swear I was aiming to create a heart with teeth, but one thing led to another.

Today I felt a need to loosen up and splash some watered down gouache on a page. Some days just call for that. While drawing this I thought, "if hearts had teeth." A thought for later.

Turned my adorable niece into a little duckling-like creature. This is a pretty simple sketch I look forward to following up on at a later time.

Took to my micron pen today and kept things a bit more minimal. Images of plopping fish and octopuses came into my mind but I decided not to look for a reference but just go with it.

Here's the first drawing to kick off this one year project. I'm super excited to do this and can't wait to see what happens. For this first drawing I took on my favorite media- india ink and gouache! While abstract, I always find a figurative element to these drawings as well.
